Flexible Work Arrangements

Not too long ago, flexible work arrangements seemed to be the purview of moms juggling family and work needs, or reentering the workplace after time spent raising children. Part-time options, job sharing, telecommuting – these have long been some of the most popular flexible work arrangements for employees.

Over the past decade, many employers have expressed a dedication to finding flexible work arrangements for all staff members, as well as offering work-life benefits to help employees (think of things like on-site childcare or gyms, for example).

But flexible work arrangements are no longer just about work-life balance needs. These days, many employers use flexible work options to cut costs – for them and their employees.

In June 2008, Utah announced it would become the first state to implement a mandatory four-day work week for government employees. The reason: high gas prices, which make commuting more difficult for employees from a cost perspective, as well as increased operating costs from the government’s point of view.

Utah’s actions aren’t unique: many states offer four-day work weeks, which help employees save money on transportation (and perhaps child care). But the reasoning behind the state’s new four-day work week highlights the cost-reduction aspect of flexible work arrangements – not just for employees, but often for employers, too.

In early 2007, Canadian IT publication Edge noted the payoff for employers: reduced physical occupancy needs (more telecommuting or job sharing employees means the need for fewer desks or offices) and often, improved employee productivity and reduced turnover.

For employees, the benefits of flexible work arrangements have long been clear: less time on the road, less gas usage, the ability to meet family needs, and, in many cases, an ability to work better when not surrounded by workplace distractions. These days, it’s looking more and more like flexible work arrangements can have a solid payoff for employers and employees. Have you considered flexible work arrangements in your company lately?
